Franky 'The Fox' Van der Elst was the undisputed engine of Club Brugge in the 1980s and 1990s, and is considered one of the greatest players in the club's history. Without many words, he directed the midfield with game intelligence, perfect positioning, and determination, the beating heart between attack and defense. Off the field, he was great: humble, respectful, a true gentleman. He won two Golden Shoes, but always remained a servant of the game. With 617 matches, he is still the club's record holder.
