Fons Bastijns was a cornerstone of Club Brugge during the glory years of the 1970s and 1980s. He initially joined the club as a striker, but coach Höfling converted him into a defender. As a graceful right back with finesse and technique, he captained the team during the golden Happel era. With three consecutive league titles (’76, ’77, and ’78) and two European finals against Liverpool (’76 and ’78), he is a legendary name in the history of the club.
