After the 1920 title, sportingly difficult years follow. The key players grow older and retire one by one. Charles Cambier does so in 1923 after twenty-two seasons. Hector Goetinck is honored in 1927 after twenty-four seasons at Club. At the end of the 1927-1928 season, the inevitable happens: Club Brugge is relegated for the first time to the Second Division.
In 1926, Club is awarded the historic registration number 3. The purchase of ‘De Klokke’ in 1920 for 40,000 Belgian francs provides a stable home base.
Club says goodbye to Charles Cambier. Between January 1901 and January 24, 1923, he played 22 full seasons and about 260 matches for Club Brugge.
Charles Cambier and Hector Goetinck were a crucial link in the early years of Club Brugge.
At the end of the season, Hector Goetinck is honored. Goetinck debuted in 1903 and would play twenty-four seasons for Club Brugge. The captain was 41 years old at that moment.

Hector Goetinck stopped playing football in April 1927. But because Club was in great sporting need during the 1927-1928 season, he put his football boots back on. In November 1927, Hector made his comeback with a victory. Club eventually finished second to last together with Racing Mechelen, Daring Club Brussels, and Racing Club Brussels. In a relegation group, all teams played each other to determine who would be relegated. FCB did not win any matches and was relegated to Second Division for the first time. A year later, Club Brugge returned to the top level.
