
During the First World War, many Club players had to go to the front as soldiers. The Germans requisitioned ‘De Klokke’, FCB’s ground. Several Club players joined the Front Wanderers, a military football team that traveled to England and Italy, among other places. The first season after the war was a great success. With attacking and physically strong football, Football Club Brugeois became champion of Belgium for the first time. The club also won the Coupe de la Dernière Heure – the precursor to the Belgian Cup. In 1920, Club unofficially achieved the first double in club history.
Several Club players played for the Front Wanderers during the First World War. This military football team, made up of players from several Belgian clubs, traveled to England and Italy, where it played charity matches to raise money for the needs of soldiers at the front.
In 1919, Charles Cambier was affectionately called the "Old Lion of Bruges" by the Bruges fans, a tribute to his indomitable character, his leadership, and his years of loyalty to the club.


On Sunday, March 21, 1920, De Klokke was bathed in sunshine. Over 8,000 spectators gathered for the title match. FCB won 3-0 against Racing Mechelen. After the match, the players were lifted onto shoulders. The euphoria was enormous.
That same year, Club also won the Coupe de la Dernière Heure, the precursor to the Belgian Cup. In the final in Brussels, it defeated Antwerp FC 5-3. In 1920, Club Brugge unofficially achieved the first double in club history.
